Heart Space
Conceptualized in the summer of 2017, Heart Space is an award-winning breakthrough creation for D.E.L. Displayed in the Ventura County Government Center lobby, it was awarded First Place in the Ventura County Arts Council’s juried show, Dimensional Art. And while it resided in a political atmosphere, its commentary is not one of political, social or cultural ilk. The true mission of Heart Space is to spark the clinically-proven sense of joy that bright neon colors and geometric patterns evoke in the human psyche. It is as simple as that. There is not a reflective undertone attempting to influence a deeper interpretation (though, if the viewer has this response, it too is warranted). Because, in this light-speed iteration of modern life that technology has forced us into, little moments of happiness can become opaque, and we must take time to recognize their worth, any way we can.
The mixed media project marries color and light in a unique union, capturing motion during the interactivity of the viewing. An amalgamation of clear acrylic panels, LED light rope, aluminum, and acrylic paint, Heart Space relies as much on the engineering approach as it does the artistic. D.E.L. fastidiously mapped out the 6 sqft. piece to stand alone, allowing observers to freely navigate their experience with Heart Space. This presentation exposes the movement of light and color, as they are tethered to the observer, thus allows for a deeper connection with the work.
