Tactile Universe
As much an exercise in patience as precision, Tactile Universe — which took four months to complete — is an immersive play on both touch and sight. The multi-colored, multi-layered three-dimensional mounds of fabric paint are sporadically applied in the style of pointillism, using color contrast as a guide. These mounds invite the viewer to intimately engage the work, experiencing it in a visceral manner.
The intention behind Tactile Universe is to allow the observer to scratch the unacceptable collective common itch to touch art when viewing it, playing to, and then rewarding, that rebellious inner voice whispering to test the boundaries of societal structure. Once engaged however, the viewer should feel an internal shift, allowing the palpable quality and even dispersion of color to take hold as a calmness permeates.
Tactile Universe is also meant to teleport back to the youthful innocence/ignorance of 80’s American pop-culture and consumption, in particular the digitization and monetization of neon color.
Tactile Universe was awarded Second Place in the Ventura County Arts Council’s juried show, Illogical Illusion. This is the first time it has since been available for purchase.
