Swinky

Swinky is a found-object, pop art work that amalgamates two unrelated forms of consumer capitalism into a singular satirical statement, paying playful homage to D.E.L.’s love of nostalgic 80’s gizmos along the way.

The geometric pig represents the ravenous appetite of the cheap labor manufacturing industry, with the sharpness of the angles reflecting the above-all importance of profit margins. The microdot treatment offers a visual take on accounting and its place as a cog in the machine. The pig’s body is halved to mirror the global divide in mass product manufacturing, often spanning oceans in its reach to consumers. This disjointed infrastructure has produced countless atrocities, from child labor to accelerated climate change, to name but a few. Yet, this is all but ignored as a result of consumer lust for bright and shiny new objects. This is where the slinky becomes essential. Its placement serves as the bridge between manufacturing and the market, which can only co-exist in a pattern of reliance upon one another. As well, the coil shape represents this endless feedback loop.

As with many pieces, D.E.L. uses a mirror mount to create movement and motion from reflection.

Swinky also happens to be a fun and engaging work, not to mention a killer conversation piece.
